Sep. 15th, 2009 05:40 pmSomeone tagged me for that "eight days of happiness" meme way longer than eight days ago. Sorry for utter fail, please accept my feeble attempt at redeeming myself. I'll even do ten things that have made me happy in the past ten days:
1. I officially completed my MS degree in biomedical/neuro engineering! \o/
2. SUPERNATURAL PREMIERE. duh.
3. All of Misha's recent interviews. Hell, Misha's face in general, but I think that's a given.
4. The extended Kara/Lee scene from Taking a Break, although I'm not sure this makes me happy so much as intensely nostalgic, both over the pairing and over BSG in general.
5. Getting comments on really old fics. (People are still reading those? o.O)
6. A behind the scenes Jensen pic, from
andreas_ri. ♥
7. This comment from
airings: from what I've seen (which is exactly one episode now), Dean/Cas is SO CANON. Idgaf what others say. IT'S TRUE WUV. ♥
8.
taurenova's BFF!verse. I still need to gather all the links for that. Rahm and Misha being BFFs is totally my personal canon.
9. Back in college, I lived right next to Chipotle. I've been going through withdrawal all year, but they finally opened one here, too!
10.
olympia_m's Roman AU which I already gushed about so I'll refrain from doing it again, but suffice to say it brings me immense and continued glee.
Some other fics, since it's been awhile since I did a recs post:
I'll Be Your Everlasting by
ze_pink_lady: The hottest fic I've read in a really long fucking time. Seriously, seriously, and so romantic, too.
Something, Something That Replies by
architeuthis: A Dean Smith masturbation fic, also hot.
A Wincest Story by
trinityofone: Cute and hilarious and utterly heartwarming fic about Castiel falling and joining the family.
Anything Worth Dying For by
waldorph: This is the most epic apocalypse fic I've read, hands down.
The Big Freeze by
strangeandcharm: Hypothermic!Dean. 'nuff said.
A couple of Renegade Angels recs, although I've read shamefully few of those. Uh, I beta'd both of these, but they're damn good, I swear:
Second Verse, Same as the First: I LOVE THIS FIC. Groundhog Day with Dean and Cas.
In the Silence Afterward: Depressing, not gonna lie, but beautifully so and Dean is mute! I have a physical disability kink or something.
Also, because I can never stop talking about Dean/Castiel, I have more thoughts on the premiere:
1. Despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of you (162/194!) think God resurrected Castiel, I gotta disagree. I don't think it's Lucifer either, but God just seems... too easy. I think the show wants us to think it's God, and more importantly, I think Castiel wanted Zachariah to think that, but I think Castiel was bluffing because he couldn't take Zach on. He relaxed a little too much as soon as Zachariah left, and he looked a little too hesitant when Dean asked. If they're gonna bring God onto the show, I don't think they'd do it this early on, especially since that would take away so much of their struggle. So far, I'm really warming up to the archangels theory.
2. Upon rewatches of the Castiel scene (don't ask how many times), I was actually able to get past my all-consuming glee over Castiel's deadpan delivery of his "I carved it into your ribs" line and notice some other things. Like how Dean accepts it unquestioningly. Can you imagine if Castiel had pulled that kind of thing on him last season? The absolute fit Dean would have thrown at being violated like that? Now, though, Castiel does it without so much as asking or even warning them first, and then tells them about it afterward, and Dean moves on to the next topic. This kind of trust, coming from Dean? ffldsjkflsdjfdklsfjkslkfjdsklfjdklsfjdklsfjsdkl YES. That is all.
3. Dean tried so hard to pretend everything was okay with Sam for almost the entire episode, he even said so himself. He needed to have Sam, and that semblance of okayness, because he just didn't have the energy to deal with a fallout and the loneliness that comes with that. You know when he got that extra energy and strength? After Castiel came back. ♥
This isn't spoilery for the premiere, so I won't cut it: I've just kind of been assuming that everyone knows Dean broke the first seal, but is that actually true? Do Sam and Bobby know, even? For some reason I feel like surely this must have been addressed, but I can't remember when or how and now I'm not so sure it has been anymore..

Date: 2009-09-15 09:52 pm (UTC)This. I think - I hope! - they're setting it up to make it look like God, and then they'll pull the rug out from under us - and Castiel, hahaha awww - at some later point. Castiel was definitely bluffing to get Zach to GTFO, because he knew that if he fought him, he'd lose.

Date: 2009-09-15 10:15 pm (UTC)It all started in this thread (http://tracy-loo-who.livejournal.com/80666.html?thread=4507674#t4507674), I think.

April 1: Attractive Government Conspiracy (With Special Guest Stars Jon and Stephen!) (http://taurenova.livejournal.com/278055.html)
April 9: PM from you:
"Rahm Emanuel," the voice was hoarse, like it didn't know how to be used. Rahm was pretty sure he'd just had a heart-attack.
"Holy fucking shit, where the fuck did you come from?!" Rahm clutched his chest and turned to face the voice. An unkempt man with in a ragged trenchcoat was standing in the middle of Rahm's office. There was something off about him, something that skittered around the edge of Rahm's mind.
"That is not important," the man said, tilting his head a little as he looked at Rahm. "You are considering turning the offer down."
"I think it's pretty fucking important," Rahm's anger lifted him out of his surprise. "Who are you and what the fuck are you doing in my office?"
The man sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly, and when he looked up at Rahm his eyes were lit by some internal fire that Rahm couldn't understand.
"I am Castiel," the man said. "I've been sent to ensure that you take the job offered to you."
"Castiel is a -" Rahm felt his eyes widen. No fucking way.
"Yes, it is," Castiel's voice was matter-of-fact as he investigated some of the papers on Rahm's desk.
"So, I guess this comes from pretty fucking high up," Rahm muttered.
"The highest," Castiel inclined his head slightly.
"Well, fuck," Rahm said with a shrug.
"You must take the job, it is important that you work with this man, Barack Obama," Castiel continued and for some reason the fact that he *wasn't* looking at Rahm made it mean more instead of less.
"I don't know if I can deal with being away from my family for that long," Rahm admitted.
"You will be rewarded, they will be rewarded," Castiel said, looking up at Rahm at last. "My Father rewards those who serve him."
"When he's not torturing them, that is," Rahm said, holding Castiel's eyes. The angel didn't flinch.
"Take the job," Castiel repeated. "You will discover that it's worth it."
Rahm blinked and Castiel was gone. He stared at his phone for a thoughtful five minutes before picking it up and dialling.
"Hey, Barack, I know it's pretty fucking late but -" Rahm paused, listened for a moment and smiled. "Yeah - I'll be your Chief of fucking Staff, Barry. Let's change the motherfucking world."

Date: 2009-09-15 10:43 pm (UTC)This, totally. I've already explained my ongoing theories, but this is definitely what I think they're heading towards. God isn't a primary feature in the show, at least not directly. There is faith and belief and personal journeys these characters undergo and, quite frankly, it would be a copout out this early on to say "GOD DID IT YAY", especially since even the angels are questioning the existence of God. There is another player here, either the archangels or other higher ups, whichever someone that obviously does not agree with what Zachariah is doing and wants to set things right with the universe in some way.
But yes, I want this to be about their personal struggles and decisions and choices. I agree. It is too early to tell, of course, though I'd much prefer God to be more ambiguous or have the show leave the presence of a superior being ambiguous so the characters, and the audience, can interpret it as they will. Yeah.
OMG YOU ARE SO RIGHT ABOUT DEAN! He definitely did take what Castiel said in stride like, "huh, okay then." Trust. I love that there's this trust bonding thing back again with Dean and Castiel, and hopefully we get more of Dean reacting to Castiel more this season like that. EEEEE! ♥
DUDE. THIS. ALL OF THIS. YES. It's sad that he was forcing himself to really make sure things were okay, but after Castiel returned he definitely had more to just say what he felt to Sam, which is so unlike the Dean from last season who pretended everything was okay when it obviously was not. Now? He tells his brother straightforward, and it's heartbreaking and sad, but I think after learning that Castiel was alive and not dead, that Bobby was going to live after what happened, that he finally found that strength to tell it like it is. Not angrily or upset, but just letting it all out how he feels. Oh, Dean.
I've just kind of been assuming that everyone knows Dean broke the first seal, but is that actually true? Do Sam and Bobby know, even? For some reason I feel like surely this must have been addressed, but I can't remember when or how and now I'm not so sure it has been anymore..
You know, I've thought about this too. I think Dean probably was a bit too emotionally scarred after learning that he initiated the breaking of the seals, unknowingly of course, and felt guilty that it was just between him and Castiel for a while. Though you'd think that he would at least mention what happened in Hell and how it all went down. I'm pretty sure Sam and Bobby would understand. But that's an interesting point to make. I hope they address this soon, because that is something that really broke Dean last season, giving him this incredible weight and now with this new revelation making that weight even heavier, it has to come up sooner or later.
no subject
Date: 2009-09-15 11:00 pm (UTC)Exactly. Having God show up would kind of nix Zachariah's storyline, and Castiel would have it way too easy, if he was backed by God. I would also prefer for them to leave God's existence, or at least presence, an ambiguous thing. They've been setting it up so nicely, what with it being utter suspicious that only four angels have seen him, and then Zachariah's "God has left the building" line and Uriel's "there is no God" thing. To have him come back now ruins all of htat potential.
hopefully we get more of Dean reacting to Castiel more this season like that
I don't doubt we will, bb, I don't doubt it. \o/
he definitely had more to just say what he felt to Sam, which is so unlike the Dean from last season who pretended everything was okay when it obviously was not
You know, I almost think that as long as something is okay (or at least pretend-okay) in Dean's life, that's all he needs. If he hadn't tried so hard to pretend last season, he wouldn't have had anyone. Now he is all, "Even if things go to shit between me and Sam for awhile, at least I've still got Cas." ♥
If I could be sure the writers didn't address it because they're saving it, then I'd be just fine with it. The thing is I don't even know what they want us to assume. I don't even know why we have been assuming Sam and Bobby know. *flop*

Last season, I kind of assumed that Dean had told them, but with the way that they were talking in 5.01 I kind of doubt that he has. There's gonna be some fireworks, I think, when that comes out.

Date: 2009-09-16 12:17 am (UTC)did that even make sense? lol
But the whole lying to Zach makes sense, even though I totally think Cas could have busted his whole I'M MOTHERFUCKING CASTIEL BITCH moves and killed him, and I would have been happy. :D
askfjdsfhkjdshgs;lj'fd OMG You're right about the Nokian Sijil. \o/ I totally looked that shit up. Dean would never have let that fly in season 4, but now he realized his love for Cas when he thought he was dead so he pretty much will take anything he can get. ;]
D'awwwwwww Dean can rely on Cas now. So cute. :} Even though I think the boys need to make up, because I don't like them fighting/not trusting each other. But if this leads to more Dean/Castiel moments, it will make my little shipper heart explode.

Date: 2009-09-16 12:49 am (UTC)But Zachariah is such an awesome villain, I'd have been sad if he died so soon! But also cheering for Cas, obviously.
Personally I think Dean is still just giggling on the inside like a little schoolgirl, all "Cas touched me, eeeeeeeee!" XD
Best of both worlds, right? Dean and Sam work on their relationship and make up eventually, but tons of Dean and Castiel bonding gets to happen in the meantime. YES.

Date: 2009-09-16 12:42 am (UTC)You know, I initially also thought God but over the past week I've been thinking like you have. It is an easy out and it is far too early in the season for God to be affecting the outcome. And everyone is correct, Cas' body language does change significantly after Zachariah leaves. All very interesting.
I love your analysis of Dean/Cas. Good thinky thoughts here. I'm hoping we get much more Dean/Cas moments. I need more Dean/Cas moments.

There will be a TON more Dean/Cas moments, I CANNOT WAIT.

Date: 2009-09-16 06:29 am (UTC)Lol. Because I can't resist temptation; how many times have you rewatched the Castiel scene?
And just, that trust thing totally makes me squee. I want more things like that between them. Generally, I just want some more Dean/Castiel scenes. We totally didn't get enough in 5.01.
Lol. My bf and I were just talking the other day about if Sam and Bobby knew about Dean breaking the first seal or not and like I told her, I've always thought that Dean hadn't told them. Mainly because I don't really remember anything implying that he had told them. I mean Sam and Chuck talked about how the angels thought it was Dean that was going to stop Lilith in 4.18, but I didn't think anything about that conversation implied that Sam knew about Dean breaking the seal. At least it never came off to me like he knew.

Date: 2009-09-16 07:55 am (UTC)I DIDN'T COUNT, OKAY? 10? 20?
There will be a TON more Dean/Castiel scenes, eeeeee.
How awesome is it that you and your bf watch Supernatural together? T_T Anyway, I'm beginning to think this too! I have no idea why I assumed they knew before.

Date: 2009-09-24 06:49 pm (UTC)To be honest, school wasn't going that well for me, toward the end, there. I'd originally been in the PhD program, but decided for a number of reasons to drop out with a MS. I'd be lying if I said my lack of motivation to continue with school had absolutely nothing to do with always wanting to spend time squeeing over SPN and fics, but at the same time, I think a healthy balance is more than possible. If you get stuff done while you're on campus during the day, you'll have nights free. And if you're like me and put off studying till the night before an exam, it's only once in awhile that you have to spend a night cramming, and the rest of the time is still available for squee. XD (Uh, note that I do not actually recommend this for everyone, though, I just happen to be good at cramming or something.)
