At first I was going to be all indignant and upset that it wasn't Castiel telling Dean all those things about who/what he is and that he'll be successful in stopping the apocalypse, wasn't Castiel looking at him with perfect, knowing confidence, wasn't Castiel who knew that this is exactly what Dean needed after that crushing revelation. Because it IS what he needed, a three week vacation from his life and the weight of the world on his shoulders, literally. Of course part of me still wishes it had been Castiel to give him that (and everything else he needs), but right around the time Zacharia told him to "stop whining about it", I knew why it wasn't Castiel: Zachariah doesn't trust Castiel to not go too soft when Dean needs a bit of a firm telling-off. Either that, or he knows it would hurt Dean's feelings and make him withdraw from Castiel like he withdrew from Sam when Sam said something similar. So.. in a way, it only reaffirms all the Dean/Castiel from last week, right? I haven't read anyone else's reviews yet, but tell me I'm not the only one who reads Dean/Castiel subtext into episodes with no Castiel. XD

Despite the lack of Castiel, though, I gotta say, I loved this episode. SO many hilariously awesome moments, but underneath it all there's that thing they do where they go all brother on each other and. omg, I've been so caught up in Castiel this season that I almost forgot the reason I watched this show for three years. Sam and Dean were so Sam'n'Dean, and I love love love that this episode was about rediscovering who they are because that's who they are, they're brothers and they work together and they tease each other and they love each other. It gives me hope for them when there's been so little of it all season. ♥

The awesome:

I was disgustingly happy that it was a different angel. As much as I love Cas and as much as I agree that he couldn't have delivered all of that info to Dean as Zachariah did, I'm just happy for more angels. Seriously, these guys need to be fleshed out a bit more. All we've got is questiony!Cas, traitorous!Uriel, and slutty!Anna. We need someone who can be a little more committed to Heaven. I'd rather have a larger world of angelic personalities to play with. XD

YOU'RE NOT THE ONLY ONE BB! I see Dean/Castiel everywhere too, even without Cas in the picture. Because...well, just because they just are, y'know?

And yeah, I was disappointed it wasn't Castiel telling him those things because I feel that, coming from Castiel, it might've meant something more? But perhaps with everything that's happening with him coming to terms with feelings and emotions and how attached he's become of Dean, that even if he was ordered to say those things (kinda like his stance in 4.02 when he's all "show me some respect"), I think he's empathizing with Dean a whole lot more than his fellow angel comrades. It might as well come from his superior -- which, btw, I am very interested with this angel hierarchy business, and wtfrak is Castiel during this time.

OMG HAI I AM SO TOTES MISSING ON CASTIEL BUT IT'S OKAY BB I AM STILL SQUEEING FROM LAST WEEK'S CASTIEL FIX M'KAY. :DDD

This episode had tons of fanservice for the AU crack!fic, f'reals. Aside from all that lolarious stuff I LOVED the boys working together even instinctively without realizing, at the time, they were brothers and even had a connection outside of that "world". They hunt because it is who they are, it is in their blood, their instinct. There is no escaping their destinies, and for Dean and his Special Destiny of saving the world from the frakking Apocalypse. OMG.

We went from Castiel-centric to Winchester-centric, and I loved it. Oh boys. ♥

God yes, even if you strip away all their memories and everything else, they're still brothers and they still hunt. That's so epic. I may have to rethink my happy ending for them in a country home with Castiel. :))

At first I was quite sad that Castiel wasn't the one to scold Dean, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized Castiel probably would've just been way too soft. And I kind of like Zacharian. I mean, he's just...well, he's another angel! And that makes me happy.

And I have to admit Sam made me incredibly happy in this episode. He was once more puppy eyed, 'I lost my shoe' Sam and it made me flail. And I swear, every time Dean ate or drank something healthy, I flinched. Like badly. Because anything healthy going into Dean is like ... I dunno, poison. It's not plausible!

..Also, I have no doubts that Cas was simply sitting on Dean's desk, being all invisible and Angel-y and just watching because he was so frakking bored. I mean, I would be. Three weeks without some torment from Dean? Good God, what's an angel to do?

I like Zachariah too! His "smelly" comment made me wonder for a second if he would be the next Uriel, but he seems like a good guy. More impersonally cold than Castiel, but still as kind as he can afford to be.

I haven't seen the ep yet, but after having my bff flail about the SamnDean, I got excited about it too, and then was shocked at self. I, too, have been so caught up with Cas that I've kinda pushed aside the bro love. It's probably a good thing we don't get Cas every ep because they need my love, and really, I find it easier to concentrate on simple things like plot and words when Misha isn't dazzling me to death.

When the sides came out, couple of months ago for this ep, I was confused about why it wasn't Cas saying these things to Dean. But after last weeks ep, I realized that, yeah, Cas WOULDN'T say those things, not anymore. And it made me squee even more over the Cas/Dean. They're going to be the death of me.

Dude. That Jensen banner. Holy shit, it's huge. I would never sleep.

I like Misha's writing. It's cute. And lol, everything is in caps, except for the y in you (unless that's how Misha caps his Y's. In that case, it's also adorable). He's such a sweetie, awwww. And you're special. :D

Seriously, I wasn't sure WHAT to think of this episode at first but as soon as it started I knew I was going to love it :P I loved the whole office setting and how Dean was just so... NOT DEAN. He was the anti-Dean, LOL. And how sad is it that as soon as he said the whole lemon and maple syrup thing I immediately went, "ZOMG, MASTER CLEANSE!!" That and as soon as Sam said "Sam Wesson" me and my boyfriend immediately looked at each other and said together, "Smith and Wesson?" and started to crack up xD

I'm pretty much loving Zachariah (Zacharia or Zachariah? The world may never know, just like Alastair or Alistair) so far :P Any angel that makes decoupage jokes has MY vote for funniest angel in the garrison xD Castiel seems to have a pretty laid back superior, which just makes me happy ^_^

I squeed so hard at the beginning, and really, all the way through. He was so anti-Dean, yes, but there were also a lot of very subtle, very DEAN things, especially in the expressions he made and the things he said.

Smith & Wesson is so so so fitting, lol god. and Winchesters. *laughs* The writers rock so hard for that.

So far I think Zachariah is the most common, but who knows? I wonder if he's actually IN the garrison as opposed to.. above it. I don't know how garrisons work, but I hope Castiel eventually wins that title, maybe after a couple of sex jokes. XD

I WILL TELL YOU A SECRET: it actually smells kinda funny. Which can be distracting. But still, so worth it.

No you are right and is consistent with what we know of the character. They have confirmed this in 4x10 and 4x16, and I think Castiel is in trouble right now anyway so I can't see Castiel at this point being allowed to do anything where Dean is concerned right now. And I loved how Dean relaxed marginally when Zachariah said he was Castiel's boss, great acting decision by Jensen.

As for SPN, the elevator flirting/not really flirting was hilarious. I love the Ghostfacers eps. I like that solving the ghost crisis didn't solve their identity crisis. It was interesting that an angel set that one up.

I just watched this and I loved everything up until the last scene with Zacharia. *blasphemes* D= I think the reason it didn't work for me was due to one part acting and one part writing. If we hadn't been shown he was an angel, I would've sworn he was a demon based on the way the actor (why does he look so familiar???) portrayed the character and the lines the writers gave him. I just didn't feel the usual otherworldly aura that I associate with the other angels coming from him. I did like the fact it was an angel behind their new reality, though. I thought up until he touched Dean's forehead that the whole thing was caused either by a demon or the Trickster or some new monster. But the fact it was an angel kept it nicely within the arc and addressed some of the issues raised by 416. =)

The Zacharia thing aside, I loved Dean's bachelour pad and agree with your list of awesomes. =DDD

May I also point out all the icky grossness in this ep??? I had to look away while the first dude nuked his head because I was eating my lunch. These writers are so creative! I had no idea he was going to do that when he grabbed those forks. And the guard! I KNEW that one was coming, but I expected it to happen when he was climbing out. Oh, and how was he able to still move his legs after the elevator crushed him? Wouldn't it have severed or smushed his spinal cord? =/

And that cap of Dean? I sometimes can't believe Jensen's lips are real. I've NEVER seen anything like them.

SERIOUSLY. I spent so much time trying to figure out where I'd seen him before (and if it was on SPN) that I almost didn't pay attention to everything he said. Actually throughout the whole ep I did think it was an angel, and was hoping it was Castiel just because Dean looked so cheerful that I thought maybe Castiel did this because he knew it was what Dean needed. But Zachariah.. I know what you mean about the lack of aura, but on the other hand I like that he's more laid back and snarky but not unkind. It seems Dean needed to hear that from someone like him.

Omg the guard, that whole scene I just kept WAITING for it and then it looked like he was safe and I wasn't sure whether to be disappointed or relieved. And then he stuck himself back in and that happened and it was WET and SQUELCHY and his bottom half kept SQUIRMING. Ew. :P To answer your question, though, it's kind of like the headless chicken thing. Leftover, panicky electrical signals from the brain can still animate the body for a few seconds after the top half gets cut off.

That totally looks like lip gloss. Just sayin'. XD

I wanted Castiel to be the one to tell Dean to man up, because he's the only angel Dean seems to trust at this point in time. Then the following hit me like a ton of bricks: What if Castiel actually refused his superiors? What if he's deliberately distancing himself away from Dean because he knows he's falling for him, and he's trying to work out these feelings which are "clouding his judgment?" They're alien to him, and he doesn't know what to do about them. So it would make sense that he would need time away from the person responsible for causing these unassailable feelings to erupt inside of him.

That's when I squeed. HARD. Still, even with that in mind, I didn't like this episode.

OMG. Sorry for late reply, but I totally squealed when I first read that. That Castiel might have actually refused because not only is he wary of Dean and all these emotions, as you say, maybe he doesn't want to have to be the one to be firm/harsh with him, either. !! So many conflicting thoughts going on here, and oh, I just want to read fic about that now.

I'm sad you didn't like the episode.. I know a lot of people wanted to see more continuity, as it were, with the hospital scene and all that, but to me it felt like this break from his life was exactly what Dean needed. Anyway, I just can't wait for this week's! \o/

I still don't know what to think of this episode but this was definitely the best line (of the season?). I just couldn't stop laughing.

At the end of "It's A Terrible Life" I was like "Wait? Where the hell was Cas???". I haven't even thought about the reasons why he wasn't in this episode but yours are quite plausible. Hopefully he doesn't get withdrawn from the case (do you say it like that in en?) because of having a soft spot for Dean.

And...Holy Dean that picture of Misha is wow! Though I can't quite make out what the writing says after "You caught me at..."
