Dean/Castiel meta/essay/manifesto thing.
Dec. 28th, 2008 03:12 pmI am back! Almost got arrested, lol, but more on that later, after I'm caught up and stuff. Hope everyone had a brilliant Christmas, and please link me to things I missed! For now, here is a Dean/Castiel thing I wrote in between all the snowboarding:
This is something I've been thinking about ever since
kitsu84 asked, at the Dean/Castiel friending meme, Why do you love Dean/Castiel? At the time I gave a short, sweet answer, but it's a question that deserves so much more than that.
I've tried, via fics, to show the world what it is I love about this pairing, but after toying around with more fic ideas, I've come to the conclusion that I can't write a fic that's powerful enough to really capture the essence of what draws me to Dean/Castiel. And I want to -- because even though this is a brand new ship and I myself have only been shipping them with any degree of seriousness for a little over a month, I've fallen so fast and so hard that I can't not try to share what I see in them with anyone and everyone who will listen, in the hopes that someone will understand. So, here is some meta instead.
Let's start with the characters as individuals. Castiel is an angel and a warrior of God, and for all intents and purposes he is infinitely old and wise upon his introduction into Dean's life. We know for a fact that he has not interacted with any humans in at least two thousand years, and I would even venture to guess that he has never walked among humans in all his countless years of existence. Nor has he ever been human, so Castiel is a being who most likely had zero first-hand experience with humans until Dean. He brought Dean back from Hell, and in return Dean shot him, stabbed him in the heart, insulted him, and refused to believe in him. And then Dean did believe in him, but stood up to him and (by proxy) the power of Heaven anyway. Castiel is absolutely fascinated with Dean. He has been confused, surprised, angered, moved, and even amused by this mere human, but more importantly, he has been made to question his infinitely-old-and-wise self.
Dean is a human, but not one who life has been kind to. He lost his mother to a demon at age four, and he lost his father to an obsession at the same time. So not only was he exposed to horrors most grown men would quail at, he was charged with the task of taking care of his baby brother, a task he lost his childhood to. Arguably, he has lost his entire life to that task. As we've seen for three seasons, Dean's sun rises and sets around Sam, and Sam's life is worth more to him than his own soul. He went to Hell for his brother once, and I don't doubt he would do it again, if it came down to it. Despite all the lives he's saved as a result of his incessant hunting, he doesn't think he is worth much because he was never taught to think so. This is what Sam doesn't get, because Sam has spent his entire life looking up to his big brother and as a result of that, I don't think it has even occurred to him that Dean may not think as highly of himself. Bobby seems to have an inkling, but he's not really in a position to change Dean's mind.
This is where Castiel comes in. Within four minutes of their first meeting, he looked into Dean's eyes, tilted his head, and said, You don't think you deserve to be saved. That's huge. He understands Dean in a way that Sam, who's too close to Dean, never will. And what's more, Castiel is in a position to help Dean realize how important and how special he is. He has very literally been sent from God, and he has already singled Dean out from the countless souls in Hell to "grip tight and raise from perdition" even though Dean spent ten years torturing other souls down there. Castiel told Dean that God had work for him, and even though it's not clear what that work is, exactly, it's my belief that Castiel is the only one who can give Dean something to live and fight for that doesn't have to do with Sam. Castiel is the only one who can give Dean something of his own to define himself by, as well as a reason for Dean to forgive himself. As far as I can see, this is exactly what Dean needs.
I also think Dean needs someone he can rely on unconditionally, especially in the days to come. Sure, he's got Sam, and no one can deny that Sam would do anything for him given half the chance, but Dean's big brother complex will never let him burden Sam with too much. Castiel is a different story. Once Dean comes to trust him enough -- and it's already begun, to be sure -- I think he will let Castiel carry some of the weight on his shoulders. It's not a luxury Dean really knows how to allow himself yet, and it can be nothing but slow in the coming, but the potential is there because from the moment Castiel saved him from Hell, the angel became Dean's and no one else's. That's not something Dean has ever had, and it can only be a good thing for him.
Now let's talk about what's in it for Castiel, because while Dean is my favorite character and I loved the idea of Castiel being good for him from the very first episode of the season, I didn't start shipping them this hard until Heaven and Hell, when I realized Dean could be just as good for Castiel. Presumably, Castiel has spent his entire existence as an instrument of God -- a hammer -- though he has never been dissatisfied with this before because he's never known anything else. Dean, through his insolent stubbornness, has already begun to show Castiel that he could be more than what he is, which on the surface may seem a strange concept because he's already a friggin' angel of the Lord. But it's true, and to me, this is the best thing that can happen to Castiel. I want him to become a being who thinks for himself and has passions and desires and flaws. I want him to experience love and sorrow and every other emotion known to man in a soul-deep, physical way instead of being the outsider who is eternally watching and wondering. No matter how I look at it, Dean is the one who can and will teach him how to be and feel all of these things. We've already seen Castiel struggle to wrap his mind around Dean's ideas of autonomy, seen him doubt, seen him confide in Dean of all the humans and angels in the universe, seen him embark on this journey which, at its core, is a humanizing one. We know that it's canonically possible for angels to fall from grace and become human, and it's obvious from the way Castiel stared at Dean and Anna that he is headed in that direction. What's equally obvious is that he has only just begun and will need Dean -- his human -- to guide him and be his friend at every step of the way.
I have no idea if Castiel will actually fall, in the end, and I'm not even sure whether or not I want him to, but it almost doesn't matter. Maybe they can have their happy ending, more likely than not they won't, but it's the journey that I'm interested in: Dean's journey of self-acceptance and Castiel's journey of self-discovery, neither of which can come to pass without the other. To me, Dean/Castiel comes down to potential. Castiel has the potential to raise Dean from his self-imposed Hell, and Dean has the potential to bring Castiel down from his Heavenly pedestal. To ship them is to explore that potential; to take them on that journey. What appeals to me is the sheer lyrical beauty of said journey. Here are two characters -- so fundamentally different in every way and therefore so intrinsically perfect for each other it's poetry in the flesh -- getting under each other's skin, fighting each other, fighting for each other, having all that open faith in each other, looking at each other with such quiet intensity, and understanding each other from their utterly incongruous frames of reference. There is just something about them and their on-screen chemistry that feels like inevitability.
The only thing that sort of bothers me about this pairing is that while I can easily picture Dean as Castiel's first priority, I can't picture anyone but Sam being Dean's. I kind of want to address this in a fic, but admittedly I have no idea how to. Maybe when I figure out how to reconcile it with my hopelessly romantic (albeit tragic) notion of their love, it'll come to me..
Now comes the shallow half of this post, because, well, come on. I am only human and thus physically incapable of talking about why Dean and Castiel belong together without mentioning (and proving) how unrealistically attractive both of the actors are. All caps stolen shamelessly from
big_heart_june (who apparently got most of them from
leggyslove). ♥
Jensen Ackles is so perfect I am still not completely convinced his existence is mathematically possible.

Misha Collins was hand-designed by God himself. Obviously.

Castiel always stands a little too close to Dean, and by "a little too close" I mean he inserts himself so far into Dean's personal space that they are breathing each other's air/DNA/soul.

Castiel always stares a little too long and a little too hard. Any longer and harder and this show would be positively pornographic.

Wing!porn is actually a legitimate possibility.

Q.E.D.
I guess this turned into something of a manifesto, eh? Either way, I'm going to tag it as a discussion, because that's what I want it to be. Tell me what you agree with, what you disagree with, what you see in them, or even just that you read this and/or drooled over the pretty and thus I successfully made you spend a few minutes of your day thinking about Dean and Castiel. I love having people to talk to about them, and the more the merrier! :D
Oh, and I know I already posted this link awhile back, but it's fitting: that big conglomerate of all the Dean/Castiel scenes so far. Watch the beginnings of their epic love for yourself. ;)
ETA: It was suggested that I include a short list of intro-to-fandom recs to go along with this manifesto, and after collecting a bunch of recs from various people, this is what I've come up with:

Date: 2008-12-28 08:50 pm (UTC)I also has trouble reconciling Dean's prioritizing Sam as # 1 with the emerging relationship with Castiel and for me it all comes down to healing. Sam was Dean's priority in an unhealthy I'm-fixated-on-you-because-I-have-no-other-reason-to-live kind of way. As Dean becomes more aware of his self worth and value aside from being Sam's protector his priorities and world view are able to evolve and expand to encompass something other than Sam. I think that this process of "healing" is a result of Dean's literal rebirth at Castiel's hands. Sam has always shown that Dean is not essential to his life [sanity, yes] and I think that as Dean understands this and the fact that Sam's decisions are not *his* decisions -- Dean's priorities will shift to Castiel.
Dean needs to be needed, he's a giver. Sam never really wanted to be the focus of that need, conversely I think that Castiel will thrive under Dean's attention just as Dean will by having his attention accepted. This, for me, is the crux of why the couple is so inevitable they compliment each other from their flaws[both are obsessive] to their strengths [they will *always* do the right thing]. Inevitable!!

Date: 2008-12-28 08:55 pm (UTC)And yeah, I've always seen it as Dean needing Sam more than Sam needing Dean. And Sam kinda snapping at first when Dean died, doesn't count because Dean ya know died.
When Sam knows Dean is alive and well, or whatever he doesn't need dean as much as Dean needs Sam.
Does that make any sense?

Date: 2008-12-28 09:02 pm (UTC)This is why I have infinite love for Dean.
And this is why my love for Dean/Castiel is endless. My heart hurts so for Dean's damaged self and that's why I was totally swept away by the awesome introduction of Castiel for the very reasons I just quoted from you.
Dean's journey of self-acceptance and Castiel's journey of self-discovery, neither of which can come to pass without the other.
I'm SO quoting you again! lmfao but how can anyone say this better? You have worded this perfectly and beautifully ♥ I love and agree with all you say.
And as for Sam always being Dean's first priority I have to agree with that too.
God, and if you're being shallow what the hell does that make me, eh??! LOL. And to add to my complete and utter shallowness I'll add another pic of the immensely and insanely beautiful Dean/Jensen:
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, and the invasion of Dean's personal space is just INSANE. SO freaking hot. And don't get me started on TEH LOOK...GUH.
Thanks Tracy sweetie, for this beautiful post. It's really good to have you back! ♥!

That's just an awesome point. :DDDDDDDD
The only thing that sort of bothers me about this pairing is that while I can easily picture Dean as Castiel's first priority, I can't picture anyone but Sam being Dean's. I kind of want to address this in a fic, but admittedly I have no idea how to.
This is really important, I think, and can I say that I would LOVE to see you address it in fic. :D

Date: 2008-12-28 09:17 pm (UTC)Castiel is the only one who can give Dean something to live and fight for that doesn't have to do with Sam. Castiel is the only one who can give Dean something of his own to define himself by, as well as a reason for Dean to forgive himself.
I'm relatively new to SPN fandom, and I've tried to ship Wincest, but this right here, I think, explains exactly why I'll personally never be a fan. (Heh, I feel like I need to tread lightly now, I really don't mean any slight against Wincesters, it's just my opinion!) I love Sam but first and foremost I love Dean, and I think he desperately needs something else in his life other than Sam. Not to *replace* him - like you basically said, Sam will always come first - but he needs to know that he is worth something on his own. And Castiel is in an excellent place to do this.
But as for Sam coming first... well, that's always the problem with shipping anything other than Wincest, isn't it? And well, I solve the problem myself by not being such a romantic. *g* I mean it's not all that uncommon for normal people to view family as more important than their lover/significant lover, but that doesn't get in the way of their relationship, you know? And Castiel, he'd definitely understand it. My heart would break if Dean was forced to make the choice, though. Really completely shatter. That's the most tragic thing about this pairing to me, and I'm not sure there IS a way to resolve it. If you plan to write fic about it, though, I'd definitely read it. :D
And dang, I was thinking about writing this kinda cracky fic for these two, but now with this post I feel like I should try something a little more serious. *laughs* Thank you for posting! I feel the need to share this with like, EVERYONE. LOL

Hahahha well said, and it couldn't be more true. Problem is, I don't know how to not be such a romantic. :)) So I guess I'll have to figure something else out, eh?
My heart would break if Dean was forced to make the choice, though. Really completely shatter.
ME TOO, which is, perhaps masochistically, why I need to write it. :"> Or read it, but I haven't seen any fics out there that have really dealt with this head-on.
Omg lol please do write cracky fic! Actually I gotta admit, after watching Misha's Nip/Tuck promo, I've got the urge to write cracky fic too, hahahahha. >.<

Date: 2008-12-28 09:24 pm (UTC)My only hope for Dean and Castiel canon wise is that Dean has something for himself, a friend and ally, and I think the show is heading that way in light of Misha being signed for season five if we get a season five.

YES. THIS. Out of all the descriptions of why one would love Dean/Castiel getting together, I wholeheartedly believe in this statement. Because essentially, it's true from the evidence and hints we're given at. Dean's struggled with self-esteem issues throughout his life, trying to raise his family, looking after Sammy and taking care of his father (along with making him proud of him) that he's never known anything else. Same with Castiel, he's never known anything other than his duties and orders and his looking after humanity from afar, but never really truly experiencing humanity firsthand. The slow humanizing of Castiel is something I love seeing, and it gives great opportunities for more interaction scenes between him and Dean. I know there will be, they wouldn't setup such a bond between the two if there weren't going to be anything else between them.
Also, I really like the fact that Castiel truly likes Dean, that he Dean is his weakness. Uriel said so. And that whole scene in the end of "Heaven and Hell" just gives me shivers; looks and expressions say more than words do right there. Setting up for something there, you can tell. Like you said, they have that potential to be something for the other, and hopefully the show plays off that.
Needless to say, since I'll be rambling and turning this ENTIRE FREAKING COMMENT into a manifesto in itself, everything here is precisely why I love and adore Dean/Castiel so much. Out of all the pairings I love, this one is one of the OTPs I ship hardcore.
Jensen Ackles is so perfect I am still not completely convinced his existence is mathematically possible.
I LOL'D AND NODDING IN TOTES AGREEMENT HERE. 'CAUSE IT'S TRUE.
Misha Collins was hand-designed by God himself. Obviously.
OBVIOUSLY. BB IS GORGEOUS. MMMMM.
Castiel always stands a little too close to Dean, and by "a little too close" I mean he inserts himself so far into Dean's personal space that they are breathing each other's air/DNA/soul.
WHICH IS TOTES HAWT AND RLY, WOULD DEAN EVER LET ANYONE ELSE INVADE HIS PERSONAL SPACE LIKE THAT? NOPE! CASTIEL IS QUITE ASSERTIVE IN THAT SENSE, AND WHETHER IT'S EITHER HE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND PERSONAL SPACE VERY WELL OR HE JUST WANTS TO BE CLOSE TO DEAN
WHICH HE TOTES DOES, YOU KNOW IT!IT JUST MAKES IT EVEN MOAR HAWT.Castiel always stares a little too long and a little too hard. Any longer and harder and this show would be positively pornographic.
ALSO, HOW INTENSELY HE STARES TOO LONGLY. AND HE HAS AMAZINGLY GORGEOUS EYES. LOOKIT THEM BLUE EYES! AND I SWEAR, WITH EACH EPISODE THEY GET BIGGER AND BLUER AND IT MAKES ME KINDA WEAK LOOKING AT THEM. SRSLY.
Wing!porn is actually a legitimate possibility
I HAS A WING!PORN KINK, AND HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH THAT. *G*

Date: 2008-12-28 10:53 pm (UTC)That's actually something I forgot to mention -- the daddy issue parallels! I know Castiel already brought that up in the witch hunt episode (terrible, terrible with episode titles) but I would love to see them incorporate that more into the Dean/Castiel dynamic. As well as everything else you said, fjdkls;aflks BRAINTWINS FTMFW, ILUSM. ♥♥♥!
Ahhh, yes, Castiel likes Dean. I squealed so loud. So, so loud. Uriel may have said it half-sarcastically, but it is so TRUE in its simplicity, and just. God, THIS SHIP IS SO BEAUTIFUL IT MAKES ME WANT TO DIE.
I JUST WANT TO TACK THIS COMMENT ONTO THE END OF MY MANIFESTO. BECAUSE, AFTER ALL, MY MANIFESTO = YOUR MANIFESTO AND YOUR MANIFESTO = MY MANIFESTO.
LOL I LOVE HOW CASTIEL IS SHORTER THAN DEAN AND YET SO POWERFUL AND COMMANDING AND PERSONAL-SPACE-INVADING AND DEAN CANNOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT EVEN SHOULD HE WANT TO. WHICH HE DOESN'T EVEN IF IT ALARMS THE SHIT OUT OF HIM. I LOVE HIS ALARMED LOOK.
AND GOD YES BIGGER AND BLUER IN EVERY EPISODE JESUS CHRIST. WHAT WILL THEY LOOK LIKE BY THE END OF SEASON 5? THERE WILL BE NOTHING ELSE ON SCREEN EXCEPT FOR BLUENESS AND EYELASHES. !!

Date: 2008-12-28 11:00 pm (UTC)I admit my inherent bias towards Dean (how can I not?! ^_~). I started off a Dean-girl simply because I found Jensen to be gorgeous beyond human comprehension (it’s a wonder our eyes haven’t been burnt out from beholding his true form XD), but as the show developed and the character evolved, I grew absolutely and positively enamored. It’s so bad that I am almost insulted when people prefer Sam because I just can’t understand how they’re so blind to Dean’s sheer awesomeness.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I adore Sammy and I’m most assuredly not trying to start any of the crazy, incessant fan!wank over the brothers, but I can’t fathom those fans who love Sammy so much they’d rather there was no Dean at all. These are the ones who see Dean as simply a shallow, womanizer with a bad mouth and a perchance for violence. These are the people who scream bloody murder if an episode even tends slightly more towards Dean than Sam. And gahhh, it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth!
As stated, I do like Sam, hell, I love the kid and I have no qualms with any part of his story. I find his demonic origins fascinating and a really good catalyst for the overarching plot of the show. If Dean weren’t around, I’m sure Sam would be my favourite hands down (hell, I keep his LSAT score on a card in my room as a goal to match/beat, lol). But sometimes, when you love Dean just that little bit more, it seems like Sammy gets everything. He has the destiny, the powers, the connection to all those other kids, the connection to Mary’s death and John’s obsession, his own obsession over Jessica’s death, the reason for Dean’s focus and continued existence… hell he even has his own demon chick now, too. Even season 3’s focus on Lilith’s deal and Dean’s soul was indirectly a result of Sam. It’s no wonder Dean defines himself by Sammy because the show very much does so, too. And while I’m not faulting Sam for any of this (poor guy didn’t ask for it!), it’s hard for me to understand those crazy people who complain when Dean gets even the smallest of storylines, because… seriously?! They want to go there? o.O
So now, with Castiel, as you said, Dean finally gets something that’s just his!!! Not only is Cas his angel, but being pulled from Hell and having a “purpose”, it’s his storyline. And this is just made of so much win I can’t even say! XD Dean is finally going to be allowed a chance to be defined outside of Sammy, even if in a roundabout way it’s because of Sammy (that is, if he was pulled out simply because he has the best chance of stopping Sam in the end). I like that Dean is getting an epic destiny, that he’s more than just Sam’s older, protective, kickass brother… because he IS! And he deserves the show to represent, yo!
And this is why (not to insult anyone *hides*), I get a little miffed over the idea of Sam/Castiel or Ruby/Castiel… because I can’t comprehend why people can’t let Dean have even that one small, tiny thing. He has so little, let him have Cas. Even if you don’t slash them, at least acknowledge that Castiel’s presence/purpose on the show is Dean (‘cause it is! ^___^).
If Dean is defined by Sammy, then Castiel is defined by Dean… and that is EPIC!
no subject
Date: 2008-12-28 11:20 pm (UTC)I love Sammy to bits as well, but the show has always been about Dean for me, so I absolutely share your frustration with Sam getting everything. It made me kind of :( from the very first season that Jared's name was always listed before Jensen's in the opening credits, though of course I understand it.
That (and the sheer epic-ness) is why to me, this season completely blows all of the other ones out of the water. Dean is finally, finally getting the storyline and destiny he deserves, and it's not like I want him to be separated from Sam because I don't at all, but I love that he has someone in his life other than Sam. And the fact that Castiel is an angel couldn't be more glorious or fitting.
God, now I just feel like I'm repeating everything you said, hahahha, so I'll end it here with: just thinking about them makes me want to do embarrassing things. fkds;alf ♥

Date: 2008-12-28 11:21 pm (UTC)And even this:
The only thing that sort of bothers me about this pairing is that while I can easily picture Dean as Castiel's first priority, I can't picture anyone but Sam being Dean's.
Even that (which I think is totally true) is to me part of the appeal. It gives the pairing an uneveness that yearns to be resolved, it makes them hard rather than easy, it gives them weight and darkness and makes me want to fix everything. I love fics that foreground Dean's investment in Sam even as they explore Dean and Castiel's growing bond. Hmm, I'm not saying this as clearly as it felt in my head as I read your post! But I feel that the added ingredient of Sam (and I'm not talking threesome, just overlapping and conflicting investments, though I certainly wouldn't be adverse to seeing them play out in a threesomey way) makes everything that much more complex and dark and potentially rewarding.
Whew. OK maybe I'll try to articulate all of this a little more when I'm not all fuzzy from snow tubing :D But in the meantime I'll just say thank you for posting this, for loving Dean/Castiel, and thanks again for the compilation of Dean/Castiel scenes, which I turned to again for my most recent vidding experiment. And now I find myself itching for more--is it January 15th yet?

Date: 2008-12-28 11:53 pm (UTC)I didn't think it was possible for a pairing to come along to bring me back after the demise of Clark and Lex
I never thought I would ever love a pairing like I loved (and still love) Harry/Draco, but Dean/Castiel is catching up quickly..
It gives the pairing an uneveness that yearns to be resolved, it makes them hard rather than easy, it gives them weight and darkness and makes me want to fix everything.
THIS. This is exactly why I want to write fic about it, but I don't know how to because it has to be just right and I don't know a right way to resolve it yet. You're right, of course, about Sam adding a whole new layer to their relationship, and I think you make perfect sense. :)
EIGHTEEN MORE DAYS. !!! Can't wait for your next vid, also! ♥♥ So glad you're here, shipping my ship and talking to me about them and making fanvids, seriously.

If Dean and Castiel work together to save Sam as if he was their child (Castiel seems to love all humanity and would want to protect what Dean loves) it would not seem odd that they put him first but were 'In love' with each other.
I'm not anti-wincest at all but for a Dean/Castiel ship to work I think Sammy has to play the role of Dean's child. Does that make sense to ayone
