May. 27th, 2008 11:56 pm1. I am in China, at my grandparents' house! Apparently LJ is censored in all of China, but have gotten around it (obviously). *beams* I could never have survived for two months with no LJ. -.- Anyway, it's hot as fuck here, as can be expected, but I have been hanging out with the cousin and he is pretty awesome, so wheeee. We took over the computer room (which incidentally has the best AC) and set up some speakers and a couple of beds in here, so life is good. :D PLUS, THERE IS SO MUCH GOOD FOOD HERE OMG. SO MUCH. SO GOOD. Seriously. I just wanna get fat off this stuff all summer.
2. Internet pretty slow here. Kind of worried about how I'm gonna download BSG on Friday. Or Saturday, whatever, it's still kind of strange to think I'm 12 hours ahead. blehhh. :( We'll see.
3. Throwing in my "vote for
vichan!" bit. Not cause she's on my flist, just cause I would feel most comfortable with her representing fandom. Also voted for
legomymalfoy and
rm, like the rest of fandom has apparently decided to do in the few days since I left. Good show, loves. ♥
4. Received confirmation of funding for Penn State, lol. I've already picked University of Rochester so there's no use agonising over a decision now, but I can't help but wonder what it would've been like if I'd chosen Penn State, you know? real neuroscience/engineering (which I have a lot of experience in) at U-Rochester vs artificial intelligence (which I have no experience in) at Penn State. Both sound so cool. :( Oh well, am just rambling.

Date: 2008-06-11 06:04 am (UTC)Cons: it snows from November through April and it's only pretty before New Year's. Lots of gray skies. Better than most "cities" in upstate New York but still not a cosmopolitan metropolis (which may be a pro as well, actually). Not a school with a strong sense of self.
Pros: there are a lot of brilliant people there, or at least there were at the time...not always the most focused, driven people (at least among the undergrads) but still fascinating people and good friends. And Rochester the city doesn't totally suck; there's a lot of history, a couple of decent museums, a smidgen of nightlife, and at least three very decent record stores.
Mind you, I haven't been back there since May 2000, so I have no idea how it's changed. :) The Cog Sci / AI / Neurosci profs were all pretty fun, though. That was one of my majors (the other was English).

Date: 2008-06-11 10:18 am (UTC)I live for snowboarding in the wintertime and I hear there are okay slopes around Rochester (which was actually a big factor in me deciding to apply, lol), so this is a big pro for me, actually. XD
As for the people, I visited in Feb and already see what you mean. They were pretty fantastic and I got the impression a lot of them were very close-knit, so I am looking forward to that. The grad students even took us out to the bars, so I know there are at least some decent ones. :)
Double majoring in English and Cog Sci must've been tough, wow. Most people can barely handle one. o.O In any case, thanks so much for the info! I'm actually pretty excited to start school, heee.
