May. 15th, 2010 11:47 amDean slipped out of bed, careful not to wake Lisa, and padded downstairs and out the front door. The cement of the driveway was cool against his bare feet, and he eyed the Impala. How he itched to get in and take her for a spin and not stop driving until they were five hundred miles away from stifling domesticity, but there was one thing about that scenario that he couldn't bring himself to face, that turned him away every time he longed for it.
The empty passenger seat.
So Dean looked away from his car and up at the stars to find the brightest one and say to it, "Cas, I know you're probably too busy to listen to me whine, and I don't know if sheriff angels get vacation time, but if you ever decide maybe you'd like to descend for a visit, well." He swallowed. "I'd like that, is all I'm saying."
An answer was the last thing he was expecting, but Dean waited, breaths shallow.
And just like the first time he'd prayed, a lifetime ago before Lucifer and Michael and the apocalypse, he heard a soft rustle behind him and spun around to see Castiel, tufts of hair sticking in every direction and carelessly disheveled.
"Cas," he said, sounding breathless even to his own ears. "I didn't think--"
"All you had to do was ask," Castiel told him gently, expression soft with warm amusement.
"Yeah, but you have more important shit--"
Castiel cut him off again. "All you've ever had to do was ask."
Dean shut his mouth and stepped up into Castiel's personal space, hesitant at first, but when Castiel stood his ground and only tilted his head ever so slightly to keep Dean's gaze, the familiarity of it had Dean wrapping his arms around Castiel and burying his face in his neck with gratefulness and relief and an aching sort of joy.
Castiel hugged him back, held him in strong arms and unconditional affection that promised to not let go until Dean was ready.
It was a while before Dean was ready, and even then he was still reluctant to let go, so he didn't. But he did break the silence to tease, "Occasionally I had to blackmail you."
A soft huff of amusement bubbled up from Castiel's chest and Dean could feel his breath, warm against his ear. "Not this time," Castiel promised.
Dean's fingers curled into the fabric of Castiel's trench coat, no doubt wrinkling it further. "Stay?" he blurted.
And Castiel replied, "Yes, Dean."
THE (REAL) END.
Also, forgot to mention, I wrote a quick pinch hit for the Secret Angels exchange a couple of weeks ago: Hard-Loving Loser
ALSO ALSO, ART REC: Title is spoilery for the finale but it's so true omg. ♥♥♥

Date: 2010-05-15 05:05 pm (UTC)I keep asking myself why, maybe Dean thinks it's wrong because he's an angel and he wouldn't care? WHY ELSE?
Rant aside, this was lovely, Tracy. Thank you. ♥

Date: 2010-05-18 12:25 am (UTC)Dean did seem a little unsure how to react to Cas being all back and angeled up, I can see that.
Thanks for the comment! ♥

Liked the exchange fic too. I'm not a Sam fan but I like him when he's used well, and that fic used him very well indeed.
I'm tempted by the castielfest but I'm not a fast writer and don't want to miss the deadline. However...
