Apparently season five is over or something?

After the season one finale, my reaction was stunned confusion followed by "...lol, semi."

Now, four years later, my reaction to the season five finale is basically stunned confusion followed by "...lol, God."

I think I'm the only one who didn't hate it. And yet, I'm not sure I liked it, either. Mostly I just CAN'T STOP LAUGHING AT IT, EVEN NOW THAT IT'S THE MORNING AFTER. BECAUSE I AM SO BEWILDERED. WHAT?

The episode was like, CARRY ON MY WAYWARD SON, and I thought, "omgggg this is it, I'm already getting all emotional, this episode is going to wreck me."


But then Chuck, while waxing nostalgic about the Impala, inadvertently objectified it. Most important OBJECT in pretty much the whole universe? Really? YOU MAKE IT SOUND LIKE THE ONE RING. OR HARRY POTTER'S WAND.


Sam: *angsts attractively*
Dean: Why don't you run along now and call Lucifer?
Sam: I am surprised by your sudden change of heart.
Dean: Your overgrown sasquatch self is denting the most important object in pretty much the whole universe and your overgrown sasquatch shoes are dirtying it. At this point, you putting out for Lucifer would be the lesser of two evils. Also, Snape Death ships you/Lucifer and will do something unpleasant to me unless it happens.
Sam: So you're finally letting me date?
Dean: No. That's the thing, Sam, you're old enough that the only one who can get you off is you. And Lucifer.


Cas is on his knees for all the wrong reasons. :(

I think most Castiel fans are pissed and most Wincest fans are happy? Of course I'm generalizing, but this is my impression.

Hmm, I can see them metaphorically looking for Sam, but I assume Dean and Sam will be together almost right off the bat like they were at the beginning of season four.

Seriously, there's been an enormous lack of Dean/Castiel Moments. If I wasn't so sure Castiel will be back, I'd be pissed that this is the ending their friendship got, after everything.

I am taking the word of Tracy as fact. After all we need a new prophet now that Chuck has gone all God-like. So the prophecy of Tracy is Cas will be back? I like it.

I was half like, half dislike, half this was great, half are you kidding, half wow that was great acting, to wow talk about no chemistry dudes (Adam/Samifer), so it was a very all over the place episode for me.

I just deeply long to know if Misha has a contract or a guest star agreement or something because the idea that I might not see Cas again leaves such a hole in my heart. I need him back.

I think it was hectic. The Sam/Dean moments were good, but beyond that, it really needed some more careful development, especially where Cas was concerned. If this had been a two hour finale, I think it would've been much better handled.

Tracy, IDEK. I thought that, with the exception of some good bits, that was on the whole a bafflingly bad episode, that illuminated so many of the problems I'd had this season that I'd been trying to ignore. Why can't they figure out how to consistently use Cas well, when he is SERIOUSLY THE MOST AWESOME THING EVER? Huh, assbutts?

Anyway, so I've gone from feeling deep dread leading up to the finale to feeling immense confusion. WTF?

I can only hope you're right about this:

If Dean never gets to try the apple pie life, he'll never stop pining for it, and if Cas never gets to return to the Heaven he misses so much, he'll never stop pining for that either. But now that they both get to have what they thought they wanted, they'll realize it's not what they wanted after all.

That makes sense to me, story-wise. But after this last episode, I'm not sure I trust them to take the most interesting narrative path. There were just too many resets. Bobby's legs were fixed (in 5x21), Cas and Bobby died then came back, Cas was reangelfied, Sam fell into the hole but then got out of the hole... I HATE RESET STORYTELLING.

Also, I wanted an epic battle, and instead the most actiony moment was Cas (of course!) and his Molotov cocktail. Why so much more awesome than anyone else, Cas?

But I think the worst thing was the "Chuck is God" bit. This means they essentially killed Chuck, because everything we knew about him before is now shown to be a lie. It also puts his conversation with Zachariah in 4x18 in a REALLY WEIRD LIGHT, but more than anything it's another reset/retcon, just like "Dean is Michael's vessel" and "the Trickster is Gabriel" and so much other stuff. ARGH.

I feel so dissatisfied. I need people to start writing fic IMMEDIATELY.

I long for last season when they knew what they were doing with Sam'n'Dean AND Castiel. Why can't we have both? I was saying to someone else last night -- the season four finale left me shaking from how amazing Castiel was, but this season finale they just didn't do his character justice at all.

It does feel like a lot of cop outs happened. :( But I guess it's better than "rocks fall, everybody dies"? If everybody HAD died and then come back next season, that would've been an even bigger cop out.

Hahha low budget = anticlimactic "battles" I guess. But considering they spent all season trying to avoid the battle, the lack of one is some sort of victory, I'm sure.

I think the Chuck = God thing is ambiguous at best. He could still be the prophet he was always presented as and then just got zapped to Heaven as soon as his work was done?

Seriously WHERE IS THE FIC ABOUT CASTIEL COMING BACK? I will not be satisfied until there is a happy ending for him, and this? Is definitely not a happy ending.

Also, is it just me, or does his trenchcoat look differently after his resurrection? Ironed?

I also think that he'll return, because it feels like the angel-storyline isn't over completely, with Sam being back. And I think Sera Gamble likes Misha/Cas a lot, so she probably wouldn't just write him off.

To be quite honest, I'm also not sure how to feel about this episode. On the one hand, I'm completely satisfied. Castiel is alive, and I really didn't want anything else. The episode wasn't perfect, but I don't think that it was bad either. However, there's something missing. Like having a delicious main dish, but no dessert. I wish they could have made the episode a bit longer.

Same here. I went into the episode fully Cas to die and when he came back I first I just thought Dean was dreaming because I couldn't believe he was alive.

I think it was because there wasn't really a cliffhanger this season; the only cliffhanger they could have done was whether or not Sam would get out of the pit and we know he did.

I totally believe we have not seen the last of Cas, and I really love the perspective that both he and Dean have to try out these things they've been pining for - before realizing balls to that, this actually isn't me.

I have no idea what to think of the episode. On one hand I'm all, epic! On the other I'm all, uhm, what? I'll have to watch it again to figure out wtf I'm feeling, in all honesty. Though I am a little miffed at Dean. But you explained why he would want the apple pie life perfectly, so I'm going with what you say. Huzzah!

Not a great ep though and your recap was definitely more entertaining. I did like the Holy Oil cocktail though, Cas once again risking everything just because it's the right thing to do. Take care Cas, one day God is going to stop bringing you back.

But my favourite scene is becoming the early one in the Impala where Dean says 'Aww' (and Castiel is looking particularly adorable) but it's actually Sam's line that sticks out for me 'Angels don't sleep'. I don't think Dean had fully realised what had happened to Cas until that moment and then he doesn't want to think about it.

I'll be watching season 6 (as I'm sure Castiel will be back and I'm hoping we haven't seen the last of Crowley)

However, I am thinking they'll have it starting a year after these events.

I think Dean realized in the last episode, but chose to deny it afterward until Sam's wakeup call moment, I dunno.

Just thinking about "one year later" makes me ache. :(

I woke up feeling something similar to you--I think Dean will realize the apple-pie life is not for him, is not what will make him happy, and Cas will realize Heaven is not for him anymore and will come back to Earth to stay. At least, I hope so, but that may be giving the writers too much credit to know how to fix it. And they've got some serious fixin' to do, in regards to the Dean/Cas relationship. They really dropped the ball this season, IMO.

But yay, pretty pretty Cas and Dean picspam! NO DAY IS BAD IN WHICH A PICSPAM LIKE THAT IS INCLUDED. \o/

(And we are in complete agreement about the creepiness of the fandom. Wow, just . . . poor form, fandom. Way to fail.)

I just don't understand how the same writers who wrote Dean/Castiel so well in season four managed to fuck up so badly this season. What is going on? T_T I hope that next season, without the pressure of the apocalypse, they'll be able to think about it more carefully.

Awesome review. I've been reading the rants but feel as you do. I enjoyed the finale, loved Chuck being allegedly revealed (Rob spoke those lines very well), and wonder about Sam, back so soon! and that pesky streetlight.

I do love the characters as they have developed and grown with the seasons. Misha's just so friggin' cute when he emotes outside Castiel's comfort zone. And I'm sure there has been much fodder laid out for all those plot bunnies resulting from this episode! Can't wait! >^..^

I love you Tracy. Really. I felt bad during this episode, because well putting aside my "Dean belongs to Cas", yeah I can!, I thought this was meangiless... Cas gave everything and I don't know, their goodbyes, it was all so raw, i seriously want to ask "hey guys? Any point in putting Cas back? Because I don't see any? I don't know this just feels like "Han no matter if everyone died, let's go on my magic stick". This final was magic for the Dean/ Sam relationship. And I'm glad because we all know Sam is everything to Dean. But serisouly, they put everyone back, Bobby doesn't count, wasn't he suppose to be a father?
This would be real actually, you can't just erase people who meant to you as if they never existed (talking about the part where they go appart and Chick says it's the last time they'll see each other in a long while or whatever).

But I'm looking forward to next season too, because Sam disserves better, Cas disserves better and so does Boby.

But I'm still sad about this end.

And Lisa? I'm not confortable with this, yes she is the picture of everything Dean wants. But she's only a picture.

I literally went numb for a split second when Cas exploded but I'd been expecting Bobby to get it since he got his legs back but still NOT COOL SHOW!!! i really don't know what to expect from season 6 but I'll reserve judgement 'til I see it and since I'm moving back home I have a few months to get my brother hooked and possibly get my mom caught up and interested again. She stopped watching after Dean went to hell so she's missed the wonder and beauty that is Cas/Misha. It's a shame really :(

Also, am I the only one who thinks this hellatus doesn't seem quite so hellish? Maybe it's cause they didn't leave us with a huge ball-o-light cliffy this year?

Me too, but I didn't believe for a second that he was dead for good, and I was right! They actually brought him back sooner than I thought they would, I almost expected them to put that off until next season.

Your mother is in for a treat, then. ;) Man, I wish I could rewatch season four for the very first time. So exciting!

I know, i don't know how to feel about it but this was Kripke's idea for the very last season.

And when i look at Sam standing there it's like he's the big brother now watching over Dean because he never got a chance to have a normal life, none of them did.

I really really hope that they don't fuck up season 6 because if it goes down the hole i'm going to be so disappointed.

Also, I KNEW chuck was god cause DUDE.. he knew everything and was right there with them for most of it :D

I still can't believe we made it to 5 seasons, our little show survived being cancelled and the shitty support from the CW.

I wonder how much this ending changed since they decided to go for season six. I have a difficult time he would have ended Castiel's arc like this without the possibility for more.

Aww, yes, I would love to see some Sam looking after Dean. ♥

I liked, but didn't love this episode. It had things I adored and things I was iffy about, and I laughed when Cas exploded when I felt like I should have been sad.

I'm actually excited about season six! I still have a few reservations, but I think they set it up to be pretty cool. Also, I heard one person say that maybe Sam is a spirit. Not so much gotten brought back, but that his body went with Lucifer while his spirit got stuck in a limbo, and that's why the light flickered! It would also be a great way to bring back Castiel, him being like "Hello Dean. Did you know your brother has been stalking you?" Also a nice way to maybe bring back Crowley~

Maybe I've been that far out of the loop, but what's this Jared/Gen fiasco? And what is the Misha fandom doing now?

I'll be honest, I laughed when he died too. >.< Not because it was funny, it was just.. ridiculous.

Spirit!Sam would be pretty cool, and it makes a lot of sense. If he was real he'd probably go in and hang out with Dean, but since he's a spirit he might decide it's better for Dean to not know or else he'll just spend his life trying to get Sam his body back.

The wank is really not that important or exciting.
