I am seriously on the verge of crying with impotent rage.

ETA: This makes me feel marginally less impotent. Petition the Santa Rosa Press Democrat to print their story. If we get enough signatures, I'll email it to the newspaper, so please sign and spread the word!

Sometimes it's embarrassing being from so-called *progressive* California. We'll legalize drugs and take care of animals, but God forbid we give humans their civil rights. Even when they HAVE the paperwork in order!

I smell a rat. Even if they had *just* been roommates rather than domestic partners, the county should not have been able to block legal representation in this case, and they should not at all have been able to sell off all the possessions that were in the names of both men and seize the assets. The sexual orientation discrimination here is, sadly, only the tip of the iceberg; I sense some very serious political corruption that targeted two old men because they though they wouldn't be able to fight back.

California dreaming, my ass.

I can't believe they would do that.

Those stupid sons of bitches.

I hope they make them all pay for that they did and when they go to hell that they become someone's bitch

*GRRR*

That is disgusting. I am crying over this. That is completely vile and awful and I can't believe they would fucking do that. I'm gay. I have a girlfriend who I plan to spend the rest of my life with. I can't even fathom. You have to be all kinds of fucked up and wrong to do that. God, I can't believe the world we live in.

Just, oh my God. Those poor men.

I think I was only more pissed when I read an article and found out in some countries homosexuality is punished by death penalty. I mean, WHAT.

This is disgusting and sad and just plain wrong. Obviously there's a big issue with gay rights here, but it's also about elder abuse and how these men's wishes were completely disregarded. I think that needs to be a focus too.

Consider that petition signed.

I'm a mixture of disappointment and rage and sadness right now. There are no words to how fucked up this is. Just, the injustice of the entire thing makes me just so utterly speechless, I can't even. Just, fuck. :/

I signed the petition. Thank you for the link, will be spreading this along.

Consider it signed and passed on.

I don't understand how people can support crap like that. D: Didn't anyone think to stand up for those men before it got so bad?

As someone who calls Sonoma County their hometown, I'm past the verge of crying and have hit screaming murder into my phone. I used to think these kinds of things were unbelievable, but it's infinitely worse when it happens in the last place you expect. GDI afldhwefnhfghngnio.

JFC, I don't even. This was both completely depressing and enraging. Nothing repulses me more than stories like this. It's the 21st fucking century and we still don't know how to treat each other as equal humans. I've reposted your petition on facebook, to do what little I can. Hopefully this will get the word out and expose the parties involved for the atrocity they've committed. Thanks for posting...

No, don't petition the Santa Rose Press! Those things are very easily faked, and besides, it's just one email. Send their editors an email. Look up the website and find the email addresses of their individual journalists and columnists and email those. Email your local journalists and tell them not only about the story but the online reaction and the lack of reaction from the Santa Rose Press. An editor could easily ignore a petition, but it would be a lot harder for them to ignore a flood of individual emails, or even a handful of persuasive ones. Don't be quiet about this!

PS:

Contact information for senior editors and management at the Santa Rosa Press Democrat:
http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/99999999/MISC/284251681

Contact information for the Associated Press, which writes articles that appear in most newspapers in America:
http://www.ap.org/pages/contact/contact.html
(Their national email is info @ ap.org , but you should also look up your local AP bureau on that page and email them. You probably won't get a reply, but they'll at least note the email.)

I don't know what your local paper is, but you probably already know their website. Their "Contact Us" link is probably at the bottom of every page. I recommend that you email their tipline with a summary of the story and a link to The Bilerico Project (http://www.bilerico.com/2010/04/sonoma_county_ca_separates_elderly_gay_couple_and.php) where it originally appeared. You should email both the tiplines and any individual journalist or columnist who might be sympathetic. I've just emailed the AP and will email both the Boston Globe and my Wicked Local paper. We all need to make some noise right now.

I've never done this sort of thing before, so thank you for the advice!

Just got an email from Colin Close, who I think does a lot of work in the Santa Rosa LGBT community, saying that he got an email from someone at the Press Democrat asking for contact info from people involved in this case. I think it's already a go!

And btw, it's good to hear from you. ♥

ETA: Also, good idea about emailing other papers too. I will write some tonight!

Glad to know that my journalism major is good for something. :P

So good to hear about that email! If a journalist from the paper was given the green light and is already writing emails and making phone calls, I'm sure the story will come out soon.

Btw, the page at www.nclrights.org/greene has a link to the complaint that the lawyer filed, complete with dates and names. Fascinating, but nauseating. The stuff happened in 2008, and we're only now hearing about it!

Hi. Normally I just lurk here for the dean/castiel, (for which excellence, much thanks)
but this got me up and out of my chair to sign the petition. Also to chant the chorus from Jerry Springer: The Opera until I no longer needed to beat the persons responsible with hardback books until they learn. Or stop breathing, whichever comes first.

(if anyone's wondering how that chorus goes: "What the fuck? What the fuck? What the fucking, fucking fuck?" )

*submerges back into lurking*
